The collection surrounds North African women who wear the ‘abaya’ to cover up - covering up in this way is a symbol of strength, power and control. Headscarves and hair accessories will compliment each outfit and reflect this concept. Strength and power are the key elements of this collection - Many of the skirts have volume, with boning and padding to create structure and achieve the shape I want. Square shoulders, square necklines and bold shapes also portray this. I looked in to other ways in which people use to mask themselves, including armour and African body paint, which has affected my prints and garment shapes. I want to give the illusion that each garment is a piece of art, with hand painted fabrics and hand sewn applique, beading and embroidery.
