Since completing her MA at the Glasgow School of Art last September KellyDawn Riot made waves with her graduate collection ‘Every blooming thing’ catching the attention of Scottish creatives through her unconventional aesthetic. This lead to her winning Scotland ReDesigned’s New Talent Award supported by the Love Your Clothes campaign and Zero Waste Scotland. Since winning the award Kelly embarked on a 6 month mentorship with Queen of upcycling Orsola De Castro. It was at this time she produced her second collection ‘Formication’, an ethical menswear collection consisting of artisanal engineered prints produced from start to finish in Scotland. This collection was launched on July 2nd as a static show in SWG3 Glasgow.
Taking inspiration from naturalist illustrators and forward thinking icons of the past, KellyDawn Riots brand embodies a unique aesthetic that invokes a sense of the ephemeral and wonder through hand crafted illustrations and paintings. Inspired by naturalist illustrators all Kelly’s printed textiles are done through her own sketchings from galleries and museums before painting the images with watercolour to create the print technique. The aim is to create pieces of wearable art that will continue to inspire: crawling with details that will never cease to amaze. These pieces are made using remnants from local Scottish mills or natural fabrics such as cottons and linens, making them strong and durable, while the eco friendly printing techniques and the attention to detail ensure that each piece is a treasure: inspired by nature, designed for life.
KellyDawn Riot will be showing at the Sustain Catwalk Show on Friday 16th October.
